Gottfried Helnwein

Gottfried Helnwein, born in Vienna in 1948, is one of the most visible and outstanding artists of our time.
He is ingenious and provocative. His oevre includes painting, graphical work, installations, sculptures, and performance art using a broad variety of techniques and media. His work is primarily focusing on psychological and sociological anxiety, particularly the violence against the innocence of children. He never was afraid to confront the audience with taboos.

Helnwein studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he started his extraordinary career achieving the Master Class Prize. He declined a chair position at the University of Hamburg to remain as a free working artist. In 1985, he moved to Germany, later in 1997 to Ireland. Since 2002 he works and lives in Los Angeles, as well.

His first exhibitions in Vienna, back in the 70s of last century, were so provocative that exhibitions were closed and his artwork confiscated by the police. In 2004, the Museum of Fine Arts of San Francisco organized a one-person exhibition for Helnwein seen by almost 130000 visitors. It highlighted his provocative artwork about the abuse of children in our society. His portrait of John F. Kennedy made it to the front cover of the Time Magazine at the 20th anniversary of JFK's assassination. In 2013, the Albertina, Vienna, performed a retrospective of Helnwein's work. With more than 250000 visitors that has been the most successful exhibition of a contemporary artist in the history of that prestigious museum.
